What a synonym finder does
A synonym is a word with the same or nearly the same meaning as another. Very few words are perfectly interchangeable, so a good synonym tool gives you options and leaves the choice to you. This one lists up to twelve words, starting with the more formal and standard and moving toward the colloquial.
How it works
For English words, the lookup is done by an AI model that has been told to return only true synonyms, in one line, with no explanations, and to avoid repeating your word. If no exact synonym exists it returns the closest words instead. It is not a lookup in a published thesaurus, and it can make mistakes, especially with rare words, slang and words with several meanings.
Choosing the right synonym
- Check the meaning. "Begin" and "commence" mean the same, but "commence" is stiffer.
- Check the register. Match formal, neutral or casual to your reader.
- Check the connotation. "Thrifty" is positive, "stingy" is negative, and both relate to spending little.
- Check the grammar. Some synonyms need a different preposition or sentence pattern.
- Read it aloud. If it sounds forced, use the simpler word.
Synonyms and paraphrasing
Swapping single words is not the same as rewriting. If you need to change a whole sentence, the Paraphrasing Tool rewrites it in one of seven modes. To look up what a word means or check that it is spelled correctly, use the Dictionary.
When not to use a synonym
Do not swap words just to avoid repetition in technical or legal writing, where a term has a fixed meaning. In an academic paper, replacing words alone does not make borrowed text your own; cite your sources.
Limits
The results are generated, not curated by editors, and the tool does not show definitions or example sentences. It does not tell you which sense of a word each synonym covers. Always confirm an unfamiliar word in a dictionary before you use it in formal writing.
