A Free QuillBot Alternative: What You Get Without Paying

Verdict

If QuillBot’s free plan feels tight, AdeptWrite is a free alternative that offers all seven paraphrasing modes, a plagiarism checker, an AI detector, a summarizer and a translator without an account. QuillBot still wins on its English paraphraser polish, extension and Premium mode library. Free tools have limits on both sides, so test the same paragraph in each before you switch.

Pros QuillBot

  • Free AI detector, grammar checker and 1,200-word summarizer.
  • A broad extension and app footprint, and a Premium mode library.
  • Most tools work without creating an account.

Cons QuillBot

  • Free paraphrasing is limited to 125 words per input and two modes.
  • The plagiarism checker and Humanizer are Premium features.
  • Prices are USD-first, with only a few local currencies supported.

What QuillBot gives you for free

As of 1 November 2026, QuillBot's own help center says free accounts include the Standard and Fluency modes, three synonym settings and paraphrasing up to 125 words per input, with no limit on how many times you run it. Its AI Detector and Grammar Checker are free, the Summarizer takes 1,200 words per input, and the Translator takes 5,000 characters. Most tools need no account. That is a generous free tier for short English passages.

What costs money on QuillBot

The remaining paraphrasing modes (Formal, Academic, Simple, Creative, Expand, Shorten and Custom), the full synonym slider, the Humanizer and the Plagiarism Checker are Premium. Premium is $19.95 a month or $99.95 a year, which works out to $8.33 a month. QuillBot says prices can adjust to your location and currency at checkout, so your price may differ.

What a free alternative should do

A good free alternative should do four things: let you use more than two modes, accept a full paragraph, not hide a paywall behind the plagiarism check, and say clearly what it cannot do. Judge any tool, including ours, against those four.

Where AdeptWrite is weaker

Be realistic about the trade-offs. AdeptWrite has no mobile app, no Google Docs add-on and no synonym slider. Its AI tools share fair daily and per-minute limits. The AI Humanizer is meant to improve writing, not to evade detectors, and no tool can promise that a detector will read your text a certain way. The AI Detector's score is an estimate, never proof. The Plagiarism Checker covers open sources, not every page on the web, so a clean result is not a guarantee of originality.

Use a paraphraser responsibly

Paraphrasing does not make borrowed ideas your own. If a source supplied the idea, cite it, whatever tool changed the wording. Your school or employer may also have rules about AI assistance, so check them and disclose help where required. Our guides explain how to paraphrase properly and why paraphrasing is not the same as plagiarism-free writing.

A five-minute test

Take a 100-word paragraph from your own writing. Run it through QuillBot's Standard mode and through AdeptWrite's Standard mode, then through the Formal and Academic modes of AdeptWrite. Compare meaning, tone and how much of the original structure survives. Choose the tool whose output needs the least editing for your purpose. See also the full AdeptWrite vs QuillBot comparison.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free alternative to QuillBot?

It depends on what you need. AdeptWrite offers all seven paraphrasing modes free, plus a plagiarism checker, AI detector, summarizer and translator, without an account. QuillBot remains stronger for its extension, apps and Premium mode library, so test both on your own text.

Is there a QuillBot alternative with no word limit?

Every free tool has some limit. AdeptWrite limits each run by characters rather than a 125-word cap, shows the limit in the tool and lets you process longer text in sections. Daily and per-minute fair-use limits also apply to AI tools.

Can I get QuillBot Premium modes for free?

Not from QuillBot. As of 2026-11-01, Formal, Academic and other modes are Premium. AdeptWrite offers Formal, Academic, Creative, Shorten and Expand to everyone, though the wording they produce differs from QuillBot’s, so compare outputs.

Is a free paraphraser safe for my text?

Check the privacy policy of any tool. AdeptWrite sends text to the server only to produce the result, does not store it and does not use it to train models. Avoid pasting confidential or personal data into any online tool.

Will a paraphraser stop a plagiarism checker flagging my text?

Not reliably, and you should not aim for that. Paraphrasing changes wording, but copied ideas still need citations. Run the Plagiarism Checker on your final draft and cite every source you used.
