Summary

The AdeptWrite Slug Generator turns a page or post title into a URL slug: all lowercase, words joined by hyphens, with accents, punctuation and symbols removed. "Café Menu & Prices!" becomes cafe-menu-and-prices. Paste up to 50 titles, one per line, choose a hyphen or an underscore, and copy the slugs with their lengths. It works for Latin, Cyrillic and Greek text. It runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

How to use Slug Generator

  1. Type or paste a title, or up to 50 titles with one on each line.
  2. Choose the separator: hyphen (recommended for URLs) or underscore.
  3. Check each slug and its length shown below it.
  4. Copy the slugs into your CMS, spreadsheet or code.

Note: Hyphen separator. Letters become lowercase, the accent in é is stripped, "&" becomes "and", and the colon, exclamation mark and extra spaces collapse into single hyphens.

Features & modes

  • Lowercase and hyphens — Words are lowercased and joined with hyphens, the format most CMSs and search guides recommend for readable URLs.
  • Accents and symbols removed — Letters such as é, ñ and ç become e, n and c, ß becomes ss, and punctuation and emoji are dropped so the slug is plain ASCII.
  • "&" becomes "and" — An ampersand is spelled out in the language of your text, instead of leaving a gap or an unsafe character in the URL.
  • Cyrillic and Greek transliterated — Titles in Cyrillic or Greek are converted to Latin letters, so a slug is still readable and safe to share.
  • Batch of up to 50 — Paste a list of titles, one per line, and get a slug for each, with its length in characters.
  • Hyphen or underscore — Switch the separator with one click. Hyphens are the usual choice for web pages; underscores suit file names and code.

What is a URL slug?

A slug is the last part of a web address that identifies a page, such as url-slug-guide in example.com/blog/url-slug-guide/. It should describe the page in a few words, so people and search engines can read it before they click.

How the Slug Generator builds a slug

  1. The title is converted to lowercase.
  2. Accented Latin letters lose their accents, and special letters are mapped: ß becomes ss, æ becomes ae, ø becomes o. German umlauts become ae, oe and ue when the text language is German.
  3. Cyrillic and Greek letters are transliterated into Latin letters.
  4. "&" becomes the word for "and" in the text language.
  5. Everything that is not a letter or a digit becomes a separator, repeated separators collapse, and separators at the start and end are removed.

Slug best practices

  • Keep it short and descriptive. Two to five meaningful words usually beat a full sentence. The tool keeps every word you give it, so shorten the title first if you want a shorter slug.
  • Use hyphens between words. Search engines treat hyphens as word separators; underscores are better kept for file names. See Hyphen vs Dash for the punctuation itself.
  • Drop filler words such as "the" and "a" when the meaning survives, and avoid dates unless the page is date-specific.
  • Do not change a live slug without a 301 redirect from the old address, or you lose the page's links and traffic.

Limits

The generator converts text; it does not check whether a slug is already used on your site, and it does not shorten titles or remove stop words for you. It works for languages written in Latin, Cyrillic and Greek letters. Scripts without letter case, such as Arabic, Hebrew, Thai or Chinese, are not handled by this tool, and a title in such a script produces an empty slug. To tidy a title first, use the Text Cleaner or the Case Converter.

Frequently asked questions

What is a slug in a URL?

A slug is the readable part of a web address that names one page, for example how-to-write-a-cover-letter in a blog URL. It normally uses lowercase letters, digits and hyphens, and describes the page content in a few words.

How do I turn a title into a slug?

Paste the title into the Slug Generator. It lowercases the text, removes accents and symbols, and joins the words with hyphens. Copy the result into your CMS. You can paste up to 50 titles, one per line, to get all their slugs at once.

Should I use hyphens or underscores in a URL?

Use hyphens for web page URLs. Search engines treat hyphens as separators between words, which makes the slug easier to read, while underscores are better for file names and code. The tool lets you switch the separator with one click.

How long should a URL slug be?

Short and descriptive: about two to five meaningful words is a good rule of thumb. There is no exact limit that suits every site, but shorter slugs are easier to read, share and remember. The tool shows each slug’s length in characters.

What happens to accents and special characters?

Accents are stripped, so é becomes e and ñ becomes n, ß becomes ss, and "&" becomes "and". Punctuation, emoji and other symbols are replaced by a separator, then repeated separators are collapsed so the slug stays clean.

Does it work for languages that are not written in Latin letters?

It works for Cyrillic and Greek by transliterating them to Latin letters. It does not support scripts without letter case, such as Arabic, Hebrew, Thai or Chinese, and a title in those scripts gives an empty slug.
