Summary

The AdeptWrite Reading & Speaking Time Calculator turns your text into minutes. It counts the words, then divides by an assumed speed: 150, 200 and 250 words per minute for slow, average and fast reading, and 130 words per minute for speaking. A 1,300-word speech therefore runs about 10 minutes. The speeds are printed next to the result, and the tool runs in your browser with no sign-up.

How to use Reading & Speaking Time Calculator

  1. Paste your article, script or speech into the box.
  2. Click Calculate (or press Ctrl/⌘ + Enter).
  3. Read the average reading time and speaking time, and the slow and fast reading range in the table.
  4. Adjust the length: cut words to shorten it, add words to fill the slot, then calculate again.

Before & after

BEFORE
Good morning, everyone. Today I want to talk about why short meetings work better than long ones, and what we can change this month to save an hour every week.
AFTER
Words: 30 Characters: 159 Sentences: 2 Reading time (average): under 1 min Speaking time: under 1 min

Note: A longer text gives readable minutes; for a rule of thumb, 130 words per minute means a 5-minute talk is about 650 words.

Features & modes

  • Reading and speaking time — Two answers from one paste: how long the text takes to read silently and how long it takes to deliver aloud.
  • Slow, average and fast range — A small table shows reading time at 150, 200 and 250 words per minute, so you can plan for different audiences.
  • Speeds stated openly — The assumed speeds are printed beside the result. They are fixed estimates, not measurements of your audience.
  • Works for CJK text — Chinese, Japanese and Korean text is counted in characters rather than words, using separate speeds.
  • Private and free — The calculation runs in your browser. No text is uploaded and there is no usage limit.

How long does it take to read or say my text?

Divide the word count by the speed. At an average reading speed of 200 words per minute, a 1,000-word article takes about 5 minutes. At a speaking speed of 130 words per minute, the same text takes about 7 to 8 minutes to say out loud. Speaking is slower than reading because you pronounce each word and pause between ideas.

The speeds this tool uses

ModeWords per minuteCharacters per minute (CJK)
Reading, slow150400
Reading, average200500
Reading, fast250600
Speaking130300

These are fixed estimates built into the page, not studies of your readers. Reading speed varies with the reader, the subject and the language, and it is lower for dense or technical text. We have not claimed language-specific norms, so treat the numbers as a planning guide.

Words to minutes for common talk lengths

Talk lengthApproximate words at 130 wpm
3 minutes390
5 minutes650

20 minutes2,600

Plan for fewer words if you use slides, show a demo, tell a story or expect questions. Pauses, laughter and visuals all add time that a word count cannot see.

Tips for timing a speech

  1. Calculate first, then read the script aloud once with a timer. Your own pace is the real test.
  2. Mark the sections and time each one, so you know where to cut.
  3. Aim to finish slightly under the limit, because nerves usually speed people up in some places and slow them down in others.
  4. For a written article, use the average reading time as a label, not a promise.

To count characters for a limit, use the Character Counter. To tighten a draft that runs long, try the Text Summarizer or the Sentence Shortener & Expander.

Frequently asked questions

How many words is a 5-minute speech?

At the 130 words per minute used by this tool, a 5-minute speech is about 650 words. If you speak faster or slower, or pause often, the number changes, so read your script aloud once with a timer.

How is reading time calculated?

The tool counts the words in your text and divides by a reading speed: 150 words per minute for slow, 200 for average and 250 for fast readers. The speeds are shown next to the result so you can see exactly how the estimate was made.

How many words per minute is the average speaking speed?

The calculator assumes 130 words per minute for speaking. Real speakers vary: a calm presenter may be slower, an excited one faster. Use the figure for planning, then time yourself.

How many words can I read in a minute?

This tool uses 200 words per minute as the average, with 150 as slow and 250 as fast. Dense, technical or unfamiliar text is read more slowly, so adjust upward when your readers are studying rather than skimming.

Does it work for Chinese, Japanese or Korean?

Yes. When the text is mainly Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters, it counts characters instead of words and uses 400, 500 and 600 characters per minute for reading and 300 for speaking. These are planning estimates, not language studies.

Is the estimate exact?

No. It is an estimate based on fixed speeds. It cannot see pauses, slides, jokes or audience reactions. Use it to get close, then rehearse aloud with a timer before the real thing.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The calculation happens in your browser, and the text is not sent to AdeptWrite or stored anywhere. There is no account to create and no usage limit, so you can time as many scripts as you need.
