What is paraphrasing?
Paraphrasing means restating an idea in different words and a different sentence structure without changing its meaning. Unlike a summary, which condenses, a paraphrase is usually about as long as the original. Unlike a direct quotation, it uses no quotation marks — but in academic and professional writing it still needs a citation to the original source.
A good paraphrase keeps the meaning of the source, changes the wording and structure, and reads naturally. The tool helps with the last two; the first is yours to check every time.
Which mode should you use?
| Mode | Best for | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | General text, articles, assignments | Words replaced with equivalents, structure tidied |
| Formal | Reports, cover letters, official emails | Colloquial words become neutral, complete sentences |
| Casual | Messages, captions, posts for friends | A lighter tone without losing the content |
| Academic | Essays, papers, literature reviews | Scholarly diction (shows → indicates), objective phrasing |
| Creative | Marketing copy, stories, social media | Livelier word choice and light figurative language |
| Shorten | Wordy sentences, word limits | Filler removed, clauses merged |
| Expand | Drafts that are too thin | Ideas clarified with added explanation, not new facts |
Paraphrasing in English and other languages
The tool rewrites in the language of your text: a Spanish paragraph comes back in Spanish. Paraphrasing is not translation; to change languages, use the AI Translator. In English, the rewrite keeps the spelling convention of your input, so colour stays British and color stays American — run the Spell Checker afterwards if you need one variety throughout.
Paraphrasing vs plagiarism
Swapping a few synonyms into the original structure is patchwriting, which most academic integrity policies treat as plagiarism. To stay safe:
- Read the source until you understand it, then put it away.
- Write the idea from memory in your own structure — or use Academic mode as a first draft.
- Compare with the original: same meaning, different wording and structure.
- Cite the source in the style you were given (APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago, Harvard) with the Citation Generator, and check the final draft with the Plagiarism Checker.
Limits you should know
Each run takes up to 6,000 characters, roughly 900 English words, so work through long documents section by section. AI output can misread technical terms, names and numbers: re-read figures, legal wording and quotations. If the AI server is unreachable, Indonesian text falls back to an offline dictionary mode; other languages show an error with a retry button.
