Summary

The AdeptWrite Citation Generator turns the details of a source into a formatted reference and in-text citation. Pick a source type (book, chapter, journal article, web page, thesis, report or video), fill in the author, title, year and other fields, and choose APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago, Harvard or IEEE. It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere, and it needs no account. Always check the result against your style guide or your instructor's rules.

How to use Citation Generator

  1. Choose the source type: book, book chapter, journal article, web page, thesis or dissertation, report or video.
  2. Fill in the fields you have: authors, title, year, publisher or journal, volume, issue, pages, URL, DOI and access date.
  3. Select a style: APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago, Harvard or IEEE.
  4. Copy the reference and the in-text citation, add them to your list, and compare them with your style guide.

Before & after

BEFORE
Source type: journal article. Authors: Maria Gonzalez, David Okafor. Title: Sleep and exam performance in first-year students. Journal: Journal of Higher Education Research. Year: 2021. Volume 14, issue 2, pages 45-61. Style: APA 7.
AFTER
Gonzalez, M., & Okafor, D. (2021). Sleep and exam performance in first-year students. *Journal of Higher Education Research, 14*(2), 45-61. In-text: (Gonzalez & Okafor, 2021)

Note: APA 7 for a two-author journal article (an illustrative source). Authors are inverted with initials, the journal name and volume are italicised, and the in-text form joins the surnames with an ampersand. Add the DOI if the article has one.

Features & modes

Available modes: APA 7 · MLA 9 · Chicago · Harvard · IEEE

  • Five styles — APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago author-date, Harvard (Cite Them Right flavour) and IEEE, including numbered IEEE references.
  • Reference and in-text together — Each result gives the reference-list entry plus the parenthetical and narrative in-text forms.
  • Seven source types — Books, chapters, journal articles, web pages, theses and dissertations, reports and videos.
  • Runs in your browser — The formatting rules run locally on your device, so your source details are not sent to a server and there is no daily quota.
  • Handles missing details — Leave out the author, date or page numbers and the generator follows the style's fallback, such as "n.d." for no date in APA.

Which citation style should you use?

Use the style your instructor, department or journal tells you to use. If nobody does, these are the usual defaults:

StyleTypical fieldsIn-text form
APA 7Psychology, education, nursing, social sciences(Author, 2021)
MLA 9Literature, languages, humanities(Author 45)
Chicago (author-date)History, arts, some social sciences(Author 2021, 45)
HarvardBusiness, many UK and Australian universities(Author 2021)
IEEEEngineering, computing[1]

Harvard has no single official rulebook, which is why universities publish their own versions. The generator follows the widely used Cite Them Right layout, so check whether your university differs.

Reference list or bibliography?

A reference list contains only the sources you cited in the text. A bibliography may also include sources you read but did not cite. APA and IEEE ask for a reference list; MLA calls its list "Works Cited". Read the guide on bibliography vs reference list if you are unsure which one your assignment wants.

How to cite a web page

Gather the author (or organisation), the publication date, the page title, the site name and the URL. Put them in the form and choose your style. If there is no author, the title moves to the author position; if there is no date, APA uses "n.d.". Include an access date only where your style asks for one, which MLA treats as optional and Harvard commonly expects.

What the generator cannot do

It formats what you type; it does not look up the source for you, so a misspelt author or a wrong year will appear in the citation. Real sources are messy: edited volumes, translated works, conference papers and social media posts may need a manual adjustment. The output is designed to follow the published style rules, but styles change between editions and instructors have their own preferences, so verify each entry against the style guide. Also use the Plagiarism Checker and correct paraphrasing: a citation does not turn a copied passage into your own writing.

Citing AI tools

Rules for citing generative AI are still being settled by each style body and each school. Follow your instructor's policy and the current guidance from the style's official site, and read our guide on how to cite ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Citation Generator free?

Yes. It is free, needs no account and has no daily quota, because the formatting runs in your browser. You can build as many references as you need for an essay, thesis or article.

Which styles does it support?

APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago author-date, Harvard in the Cite Them Right flavour, and IEEE. It supports books, chapters, journal articles, web pages, theses and dissertations, reports and videos. Other styles such as Vancouver or OSCOLA are not included.

Are the citations always correct?

No tool can promise that. The generator follows the published rules for each style, but it only formats what you enter, and styles differ between editions and institutions. Compare each reference with the official style guide or your instructor's requirements before you submit.

Is the information I type sent to a server?

No. The citation rules run locally in your browser, so the author, title and other details you enter are not uploaded to AdeptWrite. If you share or download the result, that happens on your device.

What if a source has no author or no date?

Leave the field empty. The generator follows each style's fallback: APA moves the title to the author position and uses "n.d." for no date, and MLA starts with the title. If the author is an organisation, enter it as the author.

What is the difference between a reference and an in-text citation?

An in-text citation is the short mention inside your paragraph, such as (Gonzalez & Okafor, 2021). The reference is the full entry in the list at the end that lets a reader find the source. Every in-text citation needs a matching reference.
